Thanks to modern braces, straightening your teeth is more seamless than ever before. With that being said, it’s normal to experience some discomfort, especially as your mouth adjusts to the presence of your metal brackets or clear aligners. Fortunately, there is a convenient solution: dental wax. Comprised of items like paraffin wax and beeswax, this moldable material can effectively protect your lips, gums, and the soft tissue in your mouth from cuts and irritation. Keep reading to learn why you should always have some at home!
Why You Should Keep Dental Wax at Home
As your mouth adjusts to the presence of your braces, it’s natural to experience some discomfort. Although this will subside as the soft tissue in your mouth becomes tougher, you shouldn’t have to suffer in the meantime. That’s why it’s so important to keep some dental wax at home! That way, if you begin to feel the irritation while preparing your morning coffee, cooking your evening dinner, or getting ready for bed, you can quickly alleviate the unpleasant sensation. Plus, since the material is water-resistant and non-toxic, you can eat or drink without worry!
How to Apply Dental Wax
If you’ve never applied dental wax before, then you may be wondering how to do so properly. The first step is to thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. This will prevent bacteria from entering your mouth and getting trapped in your braces. Next, pinch off a small amount of dental wax, roll it into a ball, and place it over the problematic edge or edges.
What to Do If Dental Wax Isn’t Enough
If the dental wax doesn’t do the trick, there are a few other ways you can alleviate your discomfort. First, try placing a cold compress or towel-wrapped icepack against the outside of your cheek. If you don’t have one, sipping on ice-cold water will do the trick as well. You can also take OTC pain relievers. However, this is a band-aid solution. If you continue to experience discomfort, you should talk to your orthodontist.
Dental wax is a very handy material when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. So, make sure to keep some stocked at home to make your time with braces as enjoyable as possible!
