Is your first date with someone special rapidly approaching? If so, you’re probably thinking about all of the things you need to do to ensure that things go smoothly! However, if you have braces, you might be a little extra concerned; dating is already challenging enough, but adding a factor such as orthodontics into the mix might make you feel nervous. Don’t worry – you can find four helpful tips on how to have a great time while on a first date with braces below.
Tip #1: Brush and Floss Beforehand
It goes without saying that a bright smile and fresh breath can go a long way in the world of dating—after all, your smile is your most prominent and noticeable feature! But having leftover bits of food trapped underneath your brackets and wires can potentially ruin a date before it even has the chance to run its course. Be sure that you’re brushing and flossing thoroughly before your date (and afterward, too). It also doesn’t hurt to keep a breath mint or two on your person.
Tip #2: Choose a Braces-Friendly Date
If you’re going out for a meal with your date, you should try to select a place with orthodontic-friendly meal options. Generally, restaurants don’t organize their menus based on dental needs, so you might have to think about what foods you’re easily able to eat, and which ones might present difficulty. The last thing you want to happen is for your date to laugh and point out food debris in your braces, or for you to suffer a broken bracket or wire in the middle of eating dessert!
Tip #3: Excuse Yourself as Needed
Whether you’re wearing traditional braces, or you’ve opted for clear aligners, you certainly don’t want to clean, inspect, or adjust your appliances in the middle of your date! If something happens and you need to clean or examine your smile, don’t hesitate to excuse yourself to the restroom. This will give you the chance to subtly ensure that nothing’s out of place or causing problems.
Tip #4: Smile!
It may sound cliché, but confidence truly is attractive—and even if you have braces, you still shouldn’t hesitate to smile your brightest during your date! Just because your smile isn’t perfect yet doesn’t mean you should feel the need to hide it, especially from someone that you enjoy spending time with.
In short, if you’re gearing up for a date, don’t let your braces diminish or dampen your confidence. By following these tips, you’ll ensure that your smile looks its best and is easily able to impress!
