Have you noticed that your gums seem a bit puffy now that you’ve started wearing braces? Although this can feel uncomfortable, it’s a completely normal side effect of orthodontic treatment. However, in some cases, it can also be a symptom of gum disease! That’s why it’s so important to closely monitor your gum health during your braces journey. With that in mind, if you’re looking for ways to find relief, look no further; here are some tips and home remedies that can help with swollen gums, along with when you should see your provider about the issue.

Common Causes of Swollen Gums During Orthodontic Treatment

Swollen, puffy gums are the result of a few different causes, with three of the most common including:

  • Poor Oral Hygiene – Simply put, chronically poor oral hygiene will often lead to gum inflammation, which if left untreated, can result in periodontal disease that even threatens the teeth.
  • Teeth Movement – To guide your teeth into straighter, healthier positions, your braces exert gentle pressure on your teeth. Though intended, this can also cause swollen gums.
  • Underlying Health Conditions – Gum inflammation could also be a warning sign of an underlying health condition, such as diabetes.

4 Home Remedies That Can Soothe Tender Gums

You don’t have to needlessly endure swollen, irritated gums during your braces journey – not when several home remedies are capable of providing relief! Consider the following:

  • Rinse with Salt and Water – You can dissolve some salt in a glass of warm water before gently swishing the solution around your mouth for 30 seconds. Doing this several times a day can prevent infection and reduce puffiness.
  • Be Mindful of Your Meals – You should refrain from eating anything particularly hot, spicy, or acidic, as well as chewy and crunchy items if you’re dealing with puffy gums. Aim to eat foods that are cool and soft in texture; chilled items can also provide relief to a certain extent.
  • Don’t Skip Flossing – Sometimes gum irritation is the result of debris caught between the teeth and braces; routine flossing can often remove this debris.
  • Take OTC Pain Relievers – This can help with swelling and pain, but you will need to closely follow the instructions on the label.

When You Should Speak with Your Orthodontist

You should know that some gum inflammation is normal with braces, especially right after an adjustment appointment. However, if the puffiness persists or is in tandem with another abnormal symptom, like bleeding gums, it’s important to notify your provider as soon as possible. From there, they can examine your smile, learn more about your symptoms, and determine if the root of the problem is something more serious. This is also why it’s so crucial to attend your regular check-ins; don’t let any issues go unnoticed!

Although swollen gums can be unpleasant, it’s a natural response to your teeth being moved into their new positions. Fortunately, you can ease your discomfort using the remedies listed above – leading to a more comfortable journey to a straighter smile!
