Wondering When You Should Replace Your Retainer? Read This!

Orthodontic relapse can be incredibly frustrating, especially after investing your valuable time and money on braces. Fortunately, your retainer will help prevent your teeth from drifting out of their perfectly aligned positions once more, which is why wearing it each evening is of the utmost importance. Since this is a lifelong best practice, you’ll have to replace yours a few times throughout the years. But how will you know when? Here are five tell-tale signs.

#1: It Doesn’t Fit

Is your retainer loose? Maybe you’re struggling with the opposite problem: it no longer fits comfortably over your teeth. This is one of the most common reasons patients need to have theirs replaced, so don’t hesitate to talk to your orthodontist about the next best steps.

Note: Do not force your retainer over your teeth to make them fit. Similarly, do not continue to wear your retainer if it’s loose since an ill-fitting retainer won’t effectively keep your teeth in place.

#2: There Are Small Cracks

Before you put your retainer on, it’s important to carefully inspect it for damage. If you notice cracks, even small ones, then call your orthodontist. With time, the crack will grow, warping your retainer in the process. So, it’s best to call your orthodontist’s office sooner rather than later.

#3: There’s Calcium Buildup

Even with diligent care, your retainer may turn white over time due to calcium buildup. While this is completely normal, it can make you not want to wear your retainer anymore. The good news is that your orthodontist should be able to get you a replacement fairly quickly.

#4: They Smell

If your retainer smells (which, in turn, makes your breath smell), then you should definitely talk to your orthodontist about a replacement. To prevent that from happening again, make sure to brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush each morning and evening. You can also soak it in an orthodontist-approved cleaner for 10 minutes or so for a deeper clean (when needed).

#5: You Want a More Discreet Retainer

Like braces, retainers have gotten a facelift. Instead of metal, noticeable ones, you can opt for clear, discreet ones. So, if your retainer is in good condition, but you’d prefer a more aesthetically pleasing one, then ask your orthodontist about your options!

Your retainer plays an essential role in keeping your teeth in their perfectly aligned positions. So, if yours needs to be replaced, don’t wait! Schedule an appointment with your orthodontist to get a new one sooner rather than later.
