These days, who doesn’t want a straighter, more symmetrical set of pearly whites? However, wanting perfect teeth is by no means a modern goal; historians have found evidence of early orthodontic treatments that date back thousands of years. Fortunately, modern braces have evolved by leaps and bounds since then and can now help patients achieve their orthodontic aspirations in a faster, safer, and more comfortable manner. Let’s take a moment to look back at some of the key points in the history of braces to see just how far they’ve come!
Ancient, Early Versions of Braces
Ancient Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, and others from similar cultures were constantly looking for ways to realign their teeth; dental misalignment and bite issues existed back then just as they exist today. Some early versions of braces include small bits of metal attached to the teeth using thin cords made from animal skin. Other materials used included bone, stone, and even bits of seashells.
Braces During the 16th – 20th Centuries
During the Age of Enlightenment, humanity took several leaps forward – including innovations in orthodontic care! One example of this is French physician Pierre Fauchard; in 1728, he published a book titled “The Surgeon Dentist” that detailed how mouthguards could be used to align teeth. Throughout the 1800s and 1900s, other breakthroughs occurred, including the use of wire, elastics, and rubber tubing. And once X-rays began being incorporated into medical care and dental care, orthodontic results became even easier to achieve; it’s easier to move teeth around when you can clearly see them!
Modern Braces and Similar Treatments
The term “braces” wasn’t coined until the early 1900s, when metal brackets and wires were being used, but once dental adhesive was introduced in the 1970s, modern braces truly took their shape. In the coming years, materials like stainless steel would start being used due to their durability and biocompatibility, and the methods for placing them would only become faster and more comfortable. Even alternatives to metal braces have started emerging, in the form of clear plastic aligners such as Invisalign; these do the same job as braces but offer a different, more comfortable and convenient patient experience and timeline.
The orthodontics of today draws on thousands of years of history and knowledge about straightening teeth. All in all, it’s never been easier to get a straighter, healthier, more beautiful smile!
