Embarking on the journey to a straighter smile with braces can be an exciting and transformative experience; however, it often comes with its fair share of challenges. One such obstacle that patients with braces must face is oral sores, caused by the metal rubbing against the mouth’s soft tissues. These discomforting sores can make the process more painful than it needs to be; but with the right knowledge and care, they can easily be managed and even prevented altogether. Continue reading below to learn a little more about these sores, along with some helpful at-home tips you can use to keep your orthodontic journey as comfortable as possible.

Why Do Braces Cause Oral Sores?

Also known as mouth ulcers or canker sores, oral sores can develop when the metal brackets of the braces, or even the wires, irritate the soft tissues of your mouth due to constant friction. Additionally, the brackets and wires can make it a little tougher to keep the mouth clean, which can also contribute to the development of ulcers. These sores are often painful, but luckily, there are several ways to alleviate their discomfort and prevent them. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene

While braces don’t always make it easy, one of the primary ways to prevent oral sores is to maintain superb oral hygiene. Regular brushing and flossing help to remove food particles that can get stuck in your braces, reducing irritation and the likelihood of developing sores. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is essential, as they’re gentle on your teeth and won’t cause further irritation. Not to mention, keeping your mouth clean will reduce the chances of you developing cavities—which can occur while wearing braces, and are certain to be painful, too!

Use Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a lifesaver for braces wearers; it essentially creates a protective barrier between your braces and the soft, vulnerable tissues inside your mouth, minimizing friction and reducing the chances of sores forming. All you have to do is apply a small amount of wax to the area of your braces that’s causing problems, and you’ll experience instant relief.

Don’t Skip the Small Stuff

There are also several other seemingly small but undeniably practical things you can do to ease your discomfort, such as:

  • Try to avoid certain foods that might aggravate your oral sores, including acidic or spicy items. Opt for soft, non-irritating foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies and more.
  • Apply a cream or gel designed for mouth ulcers, such as ones containing benzocaine, to the affected area. Over-the-counter pain relievers can also be used.
  • Garling with salt water can also promote healing and reduce inflammation. Additionally, you should stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water; it keeps your mouth lubricated, reducing the friction between your braces and mouth tissues.

In addition to all of the above, you should also be certain that you’re keeping up with your routine orthodontic checkups. Your orthodontist can adjust your braces as needed to minimize irritation and also offer professional guidance on managing oral sores.
