Did you recently get braces? No matter how much preparing you did beforehand on how to properly clean your teeth and which foods you can and cannot eat, it’s natural for you to have some questions along the way. For example, if you’ve noticed some puffiness, you may be wondering if swollen gums with braces are normal. To learn the answer, keep reading!

3 Common Causes of Swollen Gums with Braces (& How to Combat It)

Swollen, puffy, or otherwise irritated gums are most often a result of:

  • The pressure from your braces – Although your mouth will adjust over time, the pressure of your braces on your teeth is very noticeable at the beginning of your treatment. Since your teeth are being moved into an entirely new position, some inflammation is natural. In this case, place a cold compress (or towel-wrapped icepack) against your cheeks or rinse with a mixture of salt and warm water. Both of these methods will help alleviate puffiness.
  • Poor oral hygiene – Neglecting to brush and floss won’t just lead to bad breath, it will also result in plaque and tartar buildup that can irritate your gums. Since your oral hygiene routine requires a few extra steps with braces, it’s of the utmost importance that you dedicate the time needed to effectively clean your teeth as well as the metal brackets and wires. Need some extra help? Use pre-threaded floss, an interproximal brush, and other braces-friendly cleaning tools.
  • An untreated health condition – Inflamed gums could be the result of an untreated health concern, like diabetes. As a result, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician as well as your orthodontist. In the meantime, eat plenty of vitamin-rich foods, avoid unhealthy dental habits (like smoking), and prioritize your dental care regimen.

When to Get in Touch with Your Orthodontist

If you notice swollen gums in the days following your initial appointment or after your adjustment visits, you likely have nothing to worry about. However, if the inflammation continues, then get in touch with your orthodontist. From there, they can conduct a dental exam and determine whether there is any reason for concern. If you’re simply unhappy with your gumline, then don’t hesitate to ask about aesthetic recontouring once it’s time to get your braces removed. That way, you can have the flawless smile you’ve been dreaming of!

Swollen gums may be common, but since it could be a symptom of a bigger issue, it’s a good idea to keep in touch with your orthodontist. Remember, they are there to help you achieve a smile that is as healthy as it is beautiful!
